What was the kid's book I remember about a letter finding its way to the right mailbox?

I thought it was Maurice Sendak, but it apparently wasn't. Kinda scary and weird, the letter got taken my monsters but due to a series of events ended up in the right place. I remember vaguely an ocean of goo with disturbing things sticking out of it.
