Does anyone know how common slavery was in the mid 18th century and early 19th century?

I have to do an explication on a poem, "The Chimney Sweeper" ,.. it is about a young child who was sold and was put up for slavery. The poem was written by William Blake (born 1757, died 1827)... If possible, please list your source...
