How do you know the the difference between connotation, figurative lang, simile, metaphor, & sensory lang?

i don't understand how to find them in a piece of literature and what the difference is like i think the following from the autobiography from Fredrick Douglas ," Mr. Plummer was a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster." is a connotation but then i also see the possibility of it being something else Thanks!
